Mayari

Digital Print
30 x 40

A longtime fan of the Greek moon goddess, Artemis, Jasmine was drawn to the parallels between Artemis and Mayari mythology. Both women were hunters who claimed dominion over the moon and all creatures that roamed during the night.

Although Mayari’s story resulted in her disfigurement, she remains aninspiring figure for women.

The portrait’s visual inspiration came from Art Nouveau posters that traditionally represented glamour and beauty. Coupled with the halo effect present amongst early Catholic murals and artwork, Mayari works to reclaim pre-colonial mythology both by featuring a strong woman and in a manner akin to Catholic saints.
