A PIECE OF RICE CAKE

누워서 떡 먹기 Korean for “a piece of cake”

10 phrases in 45 minutes

Come with nothing, leave saying ten things!

No alphabet, no grammar, no homework. In this relaxed lunchtime session, literary translator and writer Huck Kahng teaches ten everyday Korean phrases by ear — how they sound, when to use them, and what they really mean. The phrases include greetings, thank-yous, ordering and paying at a restaurant or shop.

The session is for anyone curious about Korean culture: people planning a trip to Korea, K-culture fans, or anyone who’d like to greet the staff at their favourite Korean restaurant here in Calgary in their own language. No prior knowledge needed!

The food theme is only in the title: “a piece of rice cake” is a Korean way of saying something is easy, which is exactly how this lesson should feel.

Please note, food will not be served, but participants are welcome to bring their oiwn lunch.
